★ SUMMER 2020 - INFO COMING SOON ★
Welcome to SUPER COOL SUMMER SCHOOL!
Look at what we have! Over 74 incredible classes taught by professional phenomenal instructors mostly below market place prices. All year I search for talented passionate teachers – I go to events all over the bay area to find them. The prices, in most cases, are far less then they should be. This is the Larkspur Recreation Department’s gift to you. We are allowing you to explore new classes, expand your child’s interests, and delve deeper into their current passions.
Lastly, please try new things! We want you to take a chance so very badly that we have an amazing Class Change Policy. To use our program, you must be FLEXIBLE as we cannot guarantee your first choices, but we have so many wonderful classes we believe if you and your child are flexible you'll be happy. How Registration Works
During Preferred Registration, forms are processed by lot; they are placed in their lot in the order received. Lot order changes every year so that over four years, every child will get an opportunity to be scheduled first. For example, Johnny Smith may be in “lot A” this year and be registered for classes first. Next year his lot would be registered second. The year after he would be registered third, and the year following registered fourth. if he is still with us the fifth year, his lot would be registered first again.
If your first choice isn’t available, we will put you in one of your second choices. We may move the order of your classes to achieve this. If all your first and second choices are taken, we will put you in similar classes and call to get your okay before charging you. If you give us NO second choices we put your form aside, and the registration process STOPS for your child. We register everyone else before you and call you at the end of the day after we register over 500 children.
Requesting your child be in a class with another child
We can ONLY accommodate this request if your child must be placed with another child (such as with young twins, an IEP accommodation, emotional security or severe anxiety issues). In this case, submit the two children’s registration forms stapled together with a detailed explanation.
Schedule & Room Assignments
A copy of your final registration form will be emailed back to you. Room numbers will have been added to this copy. Preferred Registration forms will be emailed back the week of April 23. All other forms should be emailed back within a week. If you do not receive notification promptly, call the Recreation Department ASAP.
Allergies or other conditions
If your child has conditions that the teacher should know about (behavioral issues, learning disabilities, or severe allergies), attach a note to the registration form telling us how to address the issue so we can inform each teacher.
All children must have the county-required vaccinations.
No refund will be given unless a class is canceled.
If your child does not like their classes, they can change into any other open classes (after Extended Registration, we add a $5 Change Fee). We do not refund you for any difference in fees.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I schedule my child’s classes?
Check the listings of “Classes by the Hour” for both Sessions I and II on pages 20-23 of the summer school brochure. NOTE that some classes are for specific ages. Be sure your child is registered for the correct grade level – the grade they will be entering in the fall. If you still have questions, call the Larkspur Recreation Department at 927-6746 during our special Summer School hours: Monday through Thursday 10 am-5 pm.
Why can’t we just register online?
Please read “Registration Procedure” on page 2. When we do the scheduling, we ensure that each child gets a balanced schedule with their first, second choices or a similar class. For example, if your child’s first choice of “Baking” is full in 1°, we often can fit them into a different period or a similar class and rearrange their schedule so they still can have their first and second choices in all their classes. We save you the trouble, delay, and headache of figuring this out!
Do you have classes for 7th & 8th graders?
Yes! We offer classes appropriate for 7th and some 8th graders, especially in the arts since the skills taught in these classes take a lifetime to master. Some students never tire of a certain subject matter and, with small classes, the teachers in many of those classes give a lot of individual coaching. Your older student should realize and accept that they will be in a class with younger children. If they don’t have an issue with this, they are usually thrilled to be at SCSS. 8th graders may take any class listed for 7th graders (except football and soccer).
Can I change classes?
Yes! We hope you will be pleased with the classes, but if for any reason you wish to change the classes for which your child has been scheduled, drop by the Larkspur Recreation office at the hours posted above. Please make your changes as soon as possible since classes fill quickly. Classes and spaces are often added after registration, so please check back regarding more openings to your favorite classes. After extended registration closes, there is a $5 fee for each changed class.
When do I get my child’s schedule?
If you do not receive your schedule as stated below, call us ASAP.
- Preferred registration: You will receive an email with your child's schedule within a week of the registration deadline.
- Extended Registration: You will receive an email with your child's schedule within 2 business days after we receive payment.
Are there options for before-care and after-care?
Yes! There is affordable before-care onsite and two different after-care programs options. The parking lot is open for before-care for easy drop off. See the brochure for details.
Do I need to pack a lunch?
Yes! Please pack a lunch for the or eating break (10:55–11:10 am ). Please NO NUTS: schools do not allow any nuts in any form (trail mix, peanut butter, etc.) on campus! This is to keep children with nut allergies safe. A snack bar will be open during snack time, with juice and snacks for sale (50¢ each).
How does my child get from class to class?
Please copy your child’s schedule, and send it with your child – EACH MORNING – ATTACHED to their lunch box or backpack. We will have aides who will help children find their way between classes, but if your child loses the schedule, the aides will need to look it up in the office, and your child will be late to class. First and second graders will always be walked to class. Other children will be helped the first few days, with assistance tapering off within the first week as they accustom themselves to their schedules. Many older children like to be walked to class the entire run of a session, and this is fine. We will gladly do that!
Can my child just leave when class is over?
Anyone fourth grade and older is released from our campus after their last class. First through third graders must have the “Permission to leave Campus” form filled out in order to be released. Without this form, they must wait for an adult to pick them up.
Is there a Lost & Found?
Yes! All items (clothing and class projects) will be held in the Summer School office until the last day of school at 5 pm.
How do I drop off my child in the morning?
In order to avoid morning traffic madness, enjoy the wonderful summer weather and WALK or RIDE YOUR BIKES to school. A bike cage is available for locking bikes. No bikes, skateboards ,or scooters are to be used on campus at any time.
If I drive, can I park at the school?
No. There is no parking on campus. The lot is CLOSED until 2 pm to protect children getting to and from campus. You must park off-campus and walk in.
How do I pick up my child at the end of the day?
1st – 3rd Graders
If you are going to pick-up your child, at 1:05 pm be at your child’s last period classroom door. Please do not peer into your child’s class. It is extremely disruptive. The children see a parent and believe it is the end of class. Focus is lost, and the teachers must stop their lessons early.
If you are NOT going to pick up your child, you must fill out the applicable form and get it to the SCSS office at least by the beginning of the first period on that day. All forms are available online on our website.
• If you want your child to leave on their own (to meet a sibling; walk or bike home or to after-care on their own; meet a buddy at another room, etc.) fill out the "Permission to Leave Campus" form.
• If your child is going to after-care (shuttled to Neil Cummins), fill out the "Walk My Child to Aftercare" form. Your child will be escorted to the Hall Gym to meet the after-care staff and be supervised while waiting for the after-care shuttles to depart.
4th – 8th Graders
All 4th – 8th graders wlll be released on their own recognizance after their last class.
• If, for the first few days, you want your child walked to the Hall Gym to wait for the after-care shuttles, please fill out the "Walk My Child to Aftercare" form and get it to our SCSS office before their first day.
